As the ambitious Tīrau to Waiouru Accelerated Maintenance project (T2W) rounds the bend of its second and final season, State Highway 1 (SH1) Desert Road closures are about to begin.

Crews continue to make steady progress at the Goldsmith slip site (the first from the Ōpōtiki side and potentially largest - approx. 110 metres high and up to 60 metres wide), with an additional 40 tonne digger on the way to boost clearing efforts.
Crews began clearing slip material at both ends of the SH2 Waioweka Gorge over the weekend, with 2 significant slips now been declared safe for crews to enter.
