NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will be carrying out essential maintenance on the Auckland Harbour Bridge this summer.
Traffic will be able to cross the bridge at all times, however ramps near the bridge may be affected.
The summer maintenance programme includes activities that are suited to warmer and drier weather.
From late November 2025 to March 2026 maintenance will be carried out on the overarch and underneath the bridge.
Due to heavy rain, maintenance work that was scheduled to take place on the Auckland Harbour Bridge from 26 December to 6 January was cancelled.
The resurfacing work on the bridge requires a period of settled weather with no chance of rain to ensure that the bond between the surfacing material and the steel bridge deck is strong.
The work will be rescheduled at a later date.
Nightworks 9pm-5am, Sunday to Thursday (excluding the Christmas/New Year period).
There will be night-time lane restrictions so the team can work above the bridge on the overarch. When the team are working above the southbound clip-on lanes, Shelley Beach Road off-ramp may be closed.
When the team are working above the northbound clip-on lanes, Curran Street on-ramp and Stafford Road off-ramp may be closed.
We have chosen this period because the weather is warmer and more stable creating a safer working environment, and research has shown that traffic is lighter than usual during this time. This means there will be less congestion on the network and less disruption to motorists, neighbouring residents and businesses.
CloseYou may not see activity if the team are working above or under the bridge, but these lane restrictions are required to keep motorists and workers safe.
This work on the Auckland Harbour Bridge will cause some disruption and we ask that you factor time delays into your journey. Please consider using SH20 and SH16/SH18 (Western Ring Route).
There will be times when lane closures on the bridge are necessary while the team are working under the bridge. While the work may not be visible to the public, these closures are required to keep motorists and workers safe.
Please note this work is weather dependent and if required, will be carried out on the following available night.
Be patient and plan extra travel time due to high traffic volumes.
