Creating a safe road system

Road safety is important to the Government and to us.

Reducing harm on New Zealand’s roads lessens the impact on families, society and the health sector. It also supports economic growth. When people and goods can travel safely and efficiently, everyone benefits.

How we improve road safety is in line with Safe System principles, which recognise:

  • people make mistakes
  • we need to improve every part of the transport system
  • everyone has a role to play.

We’re responsible for specific actions in the Government’s 3-year plan.

You can contribute by choosing to:

  • buy the safest vehicle you can afford so it protects you and your loved ones in a crash
  • keep your vehicle well maintained
  • travel at a safe speed for the road and conditions - such as the weather, other traffic on the road, the safety of your vehicle, and your level of experience
  • give driving the attention it deserves and be aware of roadside hazards
  • think ahead and leave plenty of time for your journey - even short ones
  • share the road safely with other people
  • stay sober and drug-free behind the wheel and encourage your friends to do the same.

We and our road safety partners will work to:

  • improve the safety of our roads and roadsides
  • increase enforcement
  • educate people about road safety, focussing on high-risk driving behaviours, such as alcohol and drug impairment, speeding and distraction
  • increase the safety of vehicles on our roads and continue highlighting the importance of safety ratings
  • set speed limits with safety in mind – while also listening to road users, communities, and considering economic impacts.
