SH1 Pukenui and Houhora speed limits consultation

During mid-2017 the NZ Transport Agency consulted on proposals to reduce the legal speed limit on State Highway 1 through Pukenui and Houhora.

The speed limit changes were supported by all key stakeholders. A total of 182 submissions were received during the public consultation period, the majority of which were also in support of the changes.

The Transport Agency has set the new speed limits by making a bylaw in accordance with the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2017 and the Land Transport Act 1998. The new speed limits came into effect on 20 December 2017.

The new speed limits are:

  • SH1 80km/h from 615m South of Saleyard Avenue (South) to 25m North of Harbour View Road (North). The 80km/h speed limit is a reduction from the previous 100km/h speed limit.
  • SH1 50km/h from 25m North of Harbour View Road (North) to 80m South of Harbour View Road (South). The 50km/h speed limit is a reduction from the previous 80km/h speed limit.
