More than four months after Hikuwai No. 1 bridge on State Highway 35 was destroyed during Cyclone Gabrielle, a replacement Bailey bridge is now finished and open to the public.

An official ceremony, including a blessing by Ngati Porou of the 85-metre-long bridge, was held to mark the occasion. SH35 is a vital link for communities, whānau, and businesses in the region, and restoring and strengthening the access for local communities has been the driving force for everyone working on the bridge. It’s the final major piece of work throughout Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay to restore state highways damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle, and with the Bailey bridge complete, attention can now turn to long-term solutions.
