5.40pm - Update - Significant traffic delays on State Highway 1, Paekakariki

|

Crews have now stabilised the gas leak on State Highway One north of Paekakariki, Wellington. This has allowed State Highway 1 to be fully opened to normal traffic speeds.

“While the road is now fully open, it will take some time to clear the backlog. So our advice is still to delay travel if possible and stay in Wellington. Another option may be to consider leaving cars in town and take the train,” Richard Hocken, Chair, Regional Transport Response Team. “The trains will also be experiencing their usual evening peak, so spare capacity may be better after 6pm.”

“Paekakariki Hill Road remains closed to northbound through-traffic from Grays Road intersection until further notice. This to ensure that traffic on State Highway 1 can continue to flow.”

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience during this incident that has affected people’s travel on State Highway 1 today,” Mr Hocken says.
