Emergency Closure on Auckland’s Northern Motorway

|

The NZ Transport Agency advises drivers heading north on Auckland’s Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) of possible delays this afternoon because of necessary safety repairs to an overhead sign.

Strong winds have damaged the sign on a gantry just before the Onewa Road onramp north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and it has to be repaired immediately to remove any risk of it falling into motorway lanes.

An urgent closure of the two right-hand lanes is being implemented between the bridge and Onewa Road onramp northbound, and is likely to cause heavy congestion while emergency services deal with the situation.

"We regret any inconvenience and delay, but we need to ensure the motorway is safe for everyone and securing the sign as quickly as possible is a priority," says the Transport Agency’s acting Highways Manager, Steve Mutton.

The loose sign has delayed the afternoon run of the machine that shifts the concrete barrier on the bridge to provide 5 northbound lanes for traffic this evening.

The Transport Agency thanks drivers for their patience while it works quickly to secure the sign and make the motorway safe.
