Evening road closure required for SH1/Hydro Road turnaround project

|

The construction of the turnaround bay at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Hydro Road, east of Cambridge, is progressing well and heading into its final weeks.

The next phase of work will require an evening closure of Hydro Road to allow for asphalt surfacing work.

Hydro Road will be closed overnight Monday 17 July from 8pm until 5am. This work is weather dependent and will take place at the same time on the following evening, Tuesday 18 July if required.

Alternative routes will be sign-posted, and people needing to access Karāpiro Village are asked to travel outside of this closure or allow extra time for their journeys.

The impact on SH1 traffic is expected to be minimal, although temporary speed limits remain in place near the work site.

Work is on track to wrap up at Hydro Road by 31 July.

The turnaround is part of the State Highway 1 Cambridge to Piarere Safety Improvements programme and is the first of five turnarounds that will be constructed on SH1 between Cambridge and Piarere over the coming year, along with additional median barriers.

The right turn out of Hydro Road onto SH1 towards Piarere will be reinstated after the turnaround is built, until the next turnaround is built north of Hickey Road, later in the year. At that point, the right turn out of Hydro Road onto SH1 will be closed.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency thanks motorists and the local community for their ongoing patience throughout construction.
