Further blasting work associated with a project to ease a series of tight bends on SH8 near Raes Junction gets underway early next week.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says motorists using SH8 between Beaumont and Raes Junction, can expect an extended delay(s) of up to 30 minutes, for the week of the 20th – 24th April (inclusive), while further blasting is carried out to remove rock bluffs above this section of highway.

The work is being done as part of an $850,000 project to improve safety on several tight curves on this section of highway that has a history of crashes over the years. Work on the project started in early 2009.

The drilling and blasting work is essential to make room for the new road alignment. The NZTA regrets any inconvenience to road users and appreciates their patience while this essential safety work is carried out.

Subject to weather conditions, there will be an extended traffic delay(s) between 10:00am and 10:30am for the week of the 20th – 24th April (inclusive) for blasting work.

Outside the extended delay(s) due to blasting, work will continue between 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday with one lane, one way traffic being maintained at all times. Minor delays may be experienced at critical stages of the works.

The earthworks construction and excavation is expected to be completed by May 2009, with pavement construction and sealing work will commence in spring.

Information on this project will also be available on the NZTA’s Highway Info website at www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link).
