Keeping the Karangahake Gorge gorgeous

|

Road users are advised there will be overnight closures and traffic reduced to a single lane on State Highway 2 through the Karangahake Gorge from mid-April.

As part of the wider summer maintenance programme, the highway will be closed overnight through the gorge for five nights from Sunday 7 April to allow for road resurfacing. The road will close from 8pm until 5am and temporary speed limits will be in place during the day. Detours will be via SH27, SH24 and SH29 and via SH25 and SH25A.  Those taking the SH29 detour please note that there will be night-time stop/go works on SH29 over the Kaimai Range for resurfacing at the same time so road users should expect delays.

Resident access will be available from either side of the Karangahake gorge worksite during closures but only emergency services vehicles will be able to travel through the worksite.

A separate project to repair an under-slip opposite Victoria Battery, then begins on Monday 15 April. The road will be reduced to a single lane with stop/go traffic management and a speed restriction in place day and night during the work period.  This work is expected to take between 4 and 6 weeks, depending on weather.

Road works have been a feature of people’s journeys across the Bay of Plenty this summer. We understand this has been frustrating for some drivers, but making the most of the warm and dry weather means our roads will be stronger and more resilient for longer.
