Stop/Go traffic controls and a lane closure will be in place as work begins to fix a slump site on State Highway 2, Remutaka Hill.
The slump on the Featherston side of the hill was first detected on 21 July. Since then, it has been regularly checked, and a 30 km/h speed limit has been in place to keep drivers safe and reduce risk.
Mark Owen, Regional Manager Lower North Island/Top of the South, says further checks show the ground has continued to move.
“For safety reasons, we must close the lane where the slump is occurring. The ground is unstable and poses a risk to road users. Traffic will be managed under stop/go traffic lights 24/7 until the hillside is stabilised.”
There will be stop/go traffic management at the site from 5.30 am tomorrow (Thursday) morning, and traffic controllers on site between 5 am and 5 pm daily to manage morning and evening peak traffic. Warning signs are also being installed to warn road users of queued traffic. Mr Owen says the site will be monitored regularly, and work is underway to fix the slump.
“We need to ensure we have all the details we need to do the repairs properly. Contractors will be carrying out a thorough investigation and planning accordingly. Once we know the scope of the problem and how it needs to be fixed, we will provide an update on our plans.” “We know this is an essential local highway link, and we will do our best to get it fixed as soon as possible,” Mr Owen says.
Drivers can expect delays when travelling through the affected area. Waka Kotahi appreciates this may cause frustration for some road users. However, safety has to be the priority.
