Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers.

North Island:

  • There will be maintenance closures for The Terrace Tunnel (Monday night) and Mt Victoria Tunnel (Tuesday night) on SH1 in Wellington. The closures will run from 9 pm to 4:30 am. Drivers travelling through the city will have to use alternate routes and can expect longer travel times.
  • Work begins this weekend in Featherston on a safer new pedestrian crossing on State Highway 2.

South Island:

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 11 November). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

State Highway 1

SH1 Tunnel CLOSURES  

  • Terrace Tunnel, Monday night, 9 pm-4.30 am

SH1 Newlands, RAMP CLOSURES

  • Contractors will begin to set up traffic management from 7 pm.
  • While the work is underway, southbound traffic may have to detour via Cornwall Rd and Hughes Line.

Marlborough State Highways

State Highway 1                                                          

Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. A closure is in place until approximately March 2025, while a new overbridge and other infrastructure is built. More details can be found on the Marlborough District Council website and on the iRex project website

State Highway 6

SH6 Rai Saddle(external link)

  • Tuesday, 31 October to mid-December, Monday to Friday, 7 am - 6 pm
  • Stop/go with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h
  • Slip and rock fall repairs
  • Drivers can expect short delays of up to 15 minutes
  • No weekend works planned

SH6 Foxhill, Wakefield to Belgrove(external link)

  • Monday, 9 October to Friday, 15 December. 7 am – 6 pm (Mon-Fri)
  • Possibility of Saturday works at times as may be required
  • Temporary Speed Limit of 30km/h. Road users can expect travel delays of around 15 minutes.
  • Road reconstruction work
  • During nights and weekends when no work is taking place, a 50km/h speed restriction will be in place

SH6 Whangamoa Hill, east of Wakapuaka Bridge

  • Daily, 24/7
  • Single lane closure with stop/go and 30 km/h traffic management,
  • A shoulder closure will be in place at night.
  • Slip repair works
  • Expect short travel delays.

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • 30 km/h speed restrictions.  Road is open to two lanes
  • Rockfall area

State Highway 60

SH60 Tākaka Hill Night closures(external link)

  • 29 October to 24 November, Sunday to Thursday 8 pm - 5:30 am
  • Resurfacing, road repairs and general maintenance
  • The road will be opened once each night of the closures.
  • There will also be Stop/Go traffic management from Tuesday 14th November to Friday 17th November, between 6 am and 6 pm for resurfacing works.

SH60 Motueka, Lyndhurst Drive to Parker St

  • Stop/Go traffic management, local road detours and temporary speed restrictions
  • Wastewater works – Tasman District Council project
  • Short traffic delays expected

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.
