The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 16 September). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Johnsonville, NORTHBOUND ROAD CLOSED, between the Johnsonville onramp and Glenside offramp

  • Sunday to Tuesday nights, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Northbound road closed for asphalt resurfacing
  • Signposted detour via offramp and local roads

SH1 Mackays Crossing, LANE CLOSURES ON LOCAL ROAD(external link)

  • Monday to Friday, day/night
  • Project works on SH59 extension, northern intersection near Whareroa Road.
  • Local residents, detour via Poplar Ave and SH1 southbound.
  • Heavy vehicles are advised not to use layby area at Mackays Crossing.

SH1 Manakau to Ohau

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for safety improvements project

State Highway 59

State Highway 58

SH58 Paremata, ROAD CLOSED between SH59 and Postgate Drive(external link)

  • Monday and Tuesday nights, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Road closed for maintenance works
  • Signposted detour via local roads

  • Monday to Friday during the day, 9.30 am-3 pm
  • Sunday night, 6pm-5am
  • Stop/go traffic control for safety project

State Highway 2

SH2 Upper Hutt, SOUTHBOUND ROAD CLOSED south of Whakatiki Street

  • Tuesday night, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Southbound road closed for asphalt resurfacing
  • Signposted detour via local roads

SH2 Ngauranga to Petone, near Horokiwi Road(external link)

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed each direction for rockfall and safety barriers project

SH2 Remutaka Hill, Featherston side

  • Saturday to Friday, day/night
  • Stop/go traffic control for slip repairs

SH2 Upper Hutt, Birchville near Topaz Street

  • Sunday to Tuesday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am

  • Monday to Wednesday and Friday during the day, 7 am-5 pm
  • Stop/go traffic control for roadside levelling

SH53 South Featherston, near Te Maire Road

  • Monday to Wednesday and Friday during the day, 7 am-5 pm
  • Stop/go traffic control for roadside levelling

SH53 North of Martinborough to Ruamahanga Bridge

  • Monday to Wednesday and Friday during the day, 7 am-5 pm
  • Stop/go traffic control for roadside levelling

Marlborough state highways

State Highway 1

SH1 South of Ward

  • Monday to – Friday, 7:30 am - 4 pm
  • Pre seal works
  • Stop/Go Traffic Management
  • Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. A closure is in place until approximately March 2025, while a new overbridge and other infrastructure is built. More details can be found on the Marlborough District Council website.

State Highway 6

SH6 Trafalgar Street Roundabout and Haven Road Roundabout

  • Sunday and Monday nights, 8 pm – 5 am
  • Line marking
  • Trafalgar Street Roundabout Sunday night. Haven Road Roundabout Monday night (weather dependent)
  • Stop/Stop controls will be in place with delays up to 15 mins

SH6 Whakatu Drive/Richmond Deviation, Night-time Road Closure(external link)

  • Sunday, 17 September to Friday, 29 September. 8 pm – 5 am
  • Asphalting at Link Road Roundabout and Link Road Extension
  • Detour between SH6 Annesbrook Dr and SH6 McGlashen Avenue
  • No work will take place on Sundays

SH6 Whangamoa Hill, east of Wakapuaka Bridge

  • Daily, 24/7
  • Single lane closure with stop/go and 30 km/h traffic management,
  • A shoulder closure will be in place at night.
  • Slip repair works
  • Expect short travel delays.

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • 30 km/h speed restrictions.  Road is open to two lanes
  • Rockfall area

SH6, Tahunanui Drive, Street light replacement

  • Friday, 15 September to Saturday, 2 October, 7 am to 5 pm.
  • Street light replacement installation under stop/go
  • Between Tosswill Rd and Parkers Road
  • No work will take place on Sunday.

State Highway 65

  • No major works planned

State Highway 60

SH60 Motueka, Lyndhurst Drive to Parker St

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.
  • Road underslip work.

SH60 Three Brothers Corner to Collingwood

  • Monday to Friday. 8 am – 5 pm
  • Water-cutting to restore surface texture
  • Mobile operation. 30km speed restrictions between 8 am and 5 pm
  • Work is being carried out across the entire length of SH60
