Lower North Island/Upper South Island – planned state highway roadworks

Important information for drivers:

North Island

  • The Metservice has issued heavy rain warnings for Wellington, Kapiti Coast, Wairarapa and the Tararua Ranges for Saturday. Drivers are encouraged to check road and weather conditions before they travel and to make sure they drive to the conditions.
  • Details are out on what is being done across the region for the summer state highway maintenance season.
    • A busy summer beckons for State Highway maintenance in Wellington and Wairarapa
    • Asphalting and resurfacing works continue on State Highway 1 and State Highway 2. On Monday and Tuesday nights, there will be offramp and directional closures at State Highway Johnsonville. Closures are also planned for State Highway 2 Melling Link to Dowse Drive on Wednesday and Thursday night and at State Highway 2 south of Whakatiki Street to Silverstream on Sunday night.

The information below outlines the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 23 September).

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Johnsonville southbound, OFFRAMP CLOSED

  • Tuesday night, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Southbound offramp closed for road repair
  • Signposted detour via local roads

SH1 Johnsonville, NORTHBOUND ROAD CLOSED, between the Johnsonville onramp and Glenside offramp

  • Monday night, 9 pm-4.30 am
  • Northbound road closed for asphalt resurfacing
  • Signposted detour via offramp and local roads

SH1 Mackays Crossing, LANE CLOSURES ON LOCAL ROAD

  • Monday to Friday, day/night
  • Project works on SH59 extension, northern intersection near Whareroa Road.
  • Local residents, detour via Poplar Ave and SH1 southbound.
  • Heavy vehicles are advised not to use layby area at Mackays Crossing.

SH1 Manakau to Ōhau

  • Monday to Wednesday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for safety improvements project

SH1 Kuku, north of Kuku Beach Road

  • Sunday night, 7 pm-5.30 am

Travellers going through Picton need to be aware of ongoing work on Dublin Street. A closure is in place until approximately March 2025, while a new overbridge and other infrastructure is built. More details can be found on the Marlborough District Council website:

SH6 Whakatu Drive/Richmond Deviation, Night-time Road Closure

  • Sunday, 17 September to Friday, 29 September. 8 pm – 5 am
  • Asphalting at Link Road Roundabout and Link Road Extension
  • Detour between SH6 Annesbrook Dr and SH6 McGlashen Avenue
  • No work will take place on Sundays

SH6 Whangamoa Hill, east of Wakapuaka Bridge

  • Daily, 24/7
  • Single lane closure with stop/go and 30 km/h traffic management,
  • A shoulder closure will be in place at night.
  • Slip repair works
  • Expect short travel delays. 

SH6 Dellow’s Bluff, Murchison

  • 30 km/h speed restrictions.  Road is open to two lanes
  • Rockfall area

SH6 Hope, south of Three Brothers Roundabout

  • Monday to Friday, 7pm to 6 am, weather permitting.
  • Asphalting/resurfacing works
  • Stop/go traffic control and a temporary speed restriction of 30Km/h

SH6 Nelson, intersections of Trafalgar St, Haven Rd, Beatson Rd

  • Sunday to Wednesday nights, 8 pm to 5 am, weather permitting.
  • Resurfacing and line-marking of roundabouts.
  • Stop/Stop Controls under 30km/h speed limit with 15 min stop/stops throughout each night of works.

SH6 Hope Saddle to Murchison

  • Sunday to Friday nights, 8 am to 5pm
  • Water-cutting to restore surface texture
  • Traffic management: Mobile operation 30km speed restrictions

State Highway 65

  • No major works planned

State Highway 60

SH60 Motueka, Lyndhurst Drive to Parker St

  • Stop/Go traffic management, local road detours and temporary speed restrictions
  • Wastewater works – Tasman District Council project
  • Short traffic delays expected

SH60 Bird’s Hill, Golden Bay

  • Road is open to two lanes, 50km speed restriction.
  • Road underslip work.
