Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

|

Important information for drivers.

Lower North Island

  • Night-time urban motorway closures on State Highway 1 between the Terrace Tunnel and the Ngauranga Interchange continue. Two more weeks of night closures are planned for essential maintenance and resurfacing works. Drivers heading in and out of Wellington’s CBD on the urban motorway can expect delays and should allow more time for their travel.
  • Wellingtonians must also be ready for the Round the Bays event this weekend. It will see SH1 Cobham Drive/Wellington Road closed between Hamilton Road and Troy Street on Sunday  between  7.30 am and 1 pm. A detour via Kilbirnie Crescent will be available. However, people travelling to and from the airport, Kilbirnie, and Miramar can expect travel delays while this closure is in place.

  • Planned night closures for maintenance work on State Highway 1 Weld Pass begin this Sunday. Three nights of closures will be happening next week.
  • The second phase of roundabout construction begins next week at the State Highway 6, Bells and St Leonards Road intersection. There will be a closure on State Highway 6 with local road detours available.
  • Maintenance works are planned for State Highway 1 near Seddon over the next four weeks. Road crews begin this work from Monday.
  • Maintenance work on State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive, has finished earlier than planned. It means night closures originally scheduled for next week will no longer happen. However, contractors will be undertaking barrier works at night (Sun-Thurs, 6 pm to 6 am) on the route from this Sunday, 18 February, through until Thursday, 14 March. This will require shoulder closures and a temporary speed limit of 30 km/h at the work sites

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 17 February). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
