The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (11 December 2022).

Road users need to be aware there are a number of roadworks underway across the network in the lead up to Christmas. Drivers need to be aware of this and factor it into their travel plans.

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather should strike, work will be postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.

Wellington, Porirua, Kāpiti, Hutt

State Highway 1

SH1 Wellington, Monthly Tunnel Maintenance Closures, 9 pm-5.30 am

  • Terrace Tunnel - Monday night
  • Mt Victoria Tunnel - Tuesday night
  • Arras Tunnel – Wednesday night
  • Traffic use alternative routes

SH1 Wellington, Vivian Street between Taranaki Street and Kent Terrace

  • Sunday to Thursday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Southbound one lane closed for path upgrades

SH1 South of Tawa interchange

  • Sunday night, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • One lane closed each direction for vegetation control

SH1 Transmission Gully Motorway

  • Over the coming week, be prepared for left lane closures in both directions at various locations for surfacing works.
  • Restricted speed limits through worksites

SH1 Between Peka Peka and North of Ōtaki

  • Altered lane layouts day/night for expressway works

SH1 Ōtaki

  • Sunday to Friday nights, 7 pm-5.30 am
  • Stop/go traffic control for expressway works

SH59 Pukerua Bay

SH59 Between Plimmerton and Pukerua Bay

  • Starting Sunday night 7 pm through to Friday 16 December
  • Lane closures and altered lane layouts day/night for resealing work
  • Monday & Tuesday during the day, northbound closed, traffic will use a single lane in each direction on the southbound side
  • Wednesday during the day, southbound closed, traffic will use a single lane in each direction on the northbound side
  • A restricted speed limit will be in place up to 3 days and nights following the works to settle the seal
