Martinborough maintenance for State Highway 53

|

Waka Kotahi contractors will give State Highway 53, Kitchener Street, in Martinborough, a much-needed maintenance makeover later this month.

Kitchener Street will be resurfaced between 20 and 24 March, with the road getting new asphalt. The work will be done in five daytime shifts from 7 am to 7 pm.

The resurfacing will be done in stages and block by block, beginning at the turns in and out of Memorial Square. Two blocks will be closed daily to allow room for machinery movements, though only one block will be resurfaced during each closure. No room will be available for parking on the street in the closed blocks. Footpaths and walking access to local businesses will be available for pedestrians. For safety reasons, this will be managed by traffic controllers.

Because asphalt resurfacing machinery is large and takes up a lot of room, the road has to be closed while this work is carried out. A full closure also lets our contractors complete their work more quickly and efficiently, reducing overall disruption for road users, residents and business owners. We are working with Metlink to ensure the local bus service can continue while this project is underway.

Waka Kotahi appreciates roadworks like this can be frustrating. However, regular road maintenance work is the best way of preventing costlier repairs and more significant disruptions in the future. We want to thank the public for their tolerance and understanding while this work is carried out.
