Mt Iron roundabout final detour for five weeks, starts Monday

|

People travelling towards Wānaka from Luggate or Cromwell, in Central Otago, will face a detour at Ballantyne Road from Monday.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s Fulton Hogan team is completing the last leg of the new Mt Iron roundabout, requiring no traffic on the inbound lane of SH6 from Luggate.

Affected drivers will need to build in some additional travel time, says Robert Choveaux, System Manager, Lower South Island for NZTA. Just one direction of traffic on one access route will be affected.

“Anyone travelling towards the roundabout and Mt Iron from the other access points - Wānaka, Albert Town/ Hāwea/the West Coast, or Queenstown won’t be affected,” says Mr Choveaux.

From Monday, 19 February, the intersection of SH6 and the Cromwell/Luggate inbound lane (ie traffic coming from Cromwell or Luggate towards Mt Iron) will close for up to five weeks, to 22 March. Local residents will have access up to the Cardrona River Bridge, where the work site starts.

The roundabout is at the intersection of Riverbank Road, SH6 (two legs of the roundabout) and SH84, the Wānaka-Luggate highway.

All going well, the roundabout should be fully completed in April.

Wānaka Show weekend access restored – 8-10 March

“If you’re coming towards Wānaka from Luggate or Cromwell for the Wānaka Show on 8 and 9 March – Friday and Saturday – we will restore the lane to relieve congestion for the weekend, including Sunday. But it will be a slower than normal journey so please build the extra time in,” says Mr Choveaux.

Mt Iron roundabout update - local road closure point

There will be a detour in place on Ballantyne Road and Riverbank Road, a route approved for all vehicle classes (eg big trucks). Drivers of over-dimension loads/with permits need to refer to the conditions of their permits.

Drivers from Luggate or Cromwell going towards Albert Town, Lake Hāwea or the West Coast will turn left onto Ballantyne Road, then right onto Riverbank Road.

Electronic VMS signage will advertise the roundabout detour route at key points.
