New section of State Highway 59 now open

|

A critical connection between Paekākāriki and Mackays Crossing is now complete and open for drivers to use.

The new 1.7 km section of State Highway 59 forms part of the Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeata – Transmission Gully Motorway Project. Work began on it earlier this year.

The new highway runs parallel to part of State Highway 1 and is a key connection for the local community, running from north of Paekākāriki to Mackays Crossing.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi wants to thank drivers and residents for their patience while this project has been underway. This important transport link will add extra resilience for the state highway network north of Wellington.

Advice for drivers

  • Drivers are encouraged to take their time and get used to the new section of the highway. It is crucial drivers take the time to become familiar with it and its connections to State Highway 1.
  • Temporary speed limits will be in place when the new section of the highway opens. This is to allow the new road surface to settle. It is vital drivers follow the posted speed limits. Driving too fast or too slowly can damage the road surface and risks flicking stone chips and causing damage to other vehicles.
