Plan for interchange closure at Waterview

The NZ Transport Agency says overnight work on the Waterview Connection project will significantly restrict access to Auckland’s busy Great North Road Interchange next Wednesday, 26 August.

The work is related to the construction of the new motorway-to-motorway (State Highways 16 & 20) interchange that is being built above the existing one.

Road closures will start taking effect from 9pm and will remain in place until 5am the next morning (Thursday). Restricted access to the existing interchange affects:

  • people travelling on Great North Rd via Waterview towards Pt Chevalier (follow the detour via Rosebank Rd);
  • those wanting to join the Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16) city-bound (follow the detour via Rosebank Rd);
  • Those wanting to use the Northwestern eastbound exit at the interchange (follow the detours via Carrington and New North Rds);
  • Those travelling from the city on the Northwestern to Pt Chevalier exit at St Lukes Interchange and travel via Great North Rd.
  • Please note that Great North Road westbound from Carrington Road/Pt Chevalier intersection will be closed.  Please follow local detours.

Restricted access does not affect people using the interchange to join the motorway westbound, or those westbound drivers leaving the motorway for Great North Road.

If the weather is bad, the project’s works programme will be deferred to Thursday, 27 August.

The Transport Agency reminds drivers to take care at all times using the Great North Road Interchange because of the high level of construction in the area and to be aware of on-going temporary closures and detours.
