Plan for overnight SH16 closure in north-west Auckland

|

Overnight maintenance work will close a section of State Highway 16 (SH16) at Huapai in north-west Auckland, and the NZ Transport Agency advises people to allow more time for their journeys.

Weather permitting, the highway will be closed in both directions this Sunday and Monday – 6 & 7 April - between Tapu Road and SH16’s northern most intersection with Matua Road. The highway will be closed both nights from 7pm until 6am.

SH16 traffic will be diverted along Trigg Road and Foster Road.

“The detour route is 3.6km long, and drivers should add another 4 minutes to their expected travel time,” says the Transport Agency’s regional Journey Manager, Jacqui Hori-Hoult. “We’ve timed our work for night when traffic volumes are lighter, and we will do everything we can to minimise any disruption.”

Ms Hori-Hoult says electronic roadside signs will be used to keep people informed, the detour route will be well posted, and staff will be on hand to help drivers and other road users during the closures.

Contractors will upgrade an 1800m-long section of highway either side of the bridge spanning Coopers Creek by digging out and re-levelling the surface to provide smoother travel.

“The work is part of our on-going maintenance to ensure state highways in the region are kept in a good and safe condition for all road users, and we’re taking advantage of the last of the settled and warmer weather before the onset of winter to complete this work,” says Ms Hori-Hoult.

“The Transport Agency would like to thank drivers for their support, and we encourage people to drive with care and patience – particularly on the unfamiliar detour route.”

Next Tuesday and Wednesday nights – 8 & 9 April – have been set aside as contingency days if bad weather prevents the work from being completed on time.
