REMINDER: Finishing works about to get underway for State Highway 59 extension

|

Te Aranui o Te Rangihaeta - Transmission Gully project works completing the extension of State Highway 59 between Paekākāriki and Mackays Crossing are about to get underway.

From this Sunday, 17 September, contractors will be working on Whareroa Road, between the Emerald Glen Road roundabout and rail crossing near Queen Elizabeth Park.

They will be preparing the road for the opening the new section of State Highway 59 – work on the highway will be underway simultaneously.

The aim is to have this work completed by mid-November.

While it is underway, drivers can expect directional lane closures and detours between Queen Elizabeth Park and Whareroa Park and a temporary stop on right-hand turns from the northbound offramp at Mackays Crossing.

Directional lane closures and detours are needed to keep contractors and drivers safe. They also allow work to be completed much more quickly and efficiently, reducing the overall disruption for drivers.

Works schedule and location

  • Sunday 17 September until mid-November
  • Day works - Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm
  • Night works – Sunday to Thursday, 7pm to 5am

Advice for drivers

  • Motorists travelling north to Whareroa Farm or Emerald Glen Road should stay on State Highway 1, detour via the highway to Poplar Avenue and back, exiting at the southbound Mackays Crossing offramp (approximately a six-minute detour).
  • Heavy vehicles are encouraged to use state highways and should not use the Mackays Crossing layby area.
  • If you are travelling to Queen Elizabeth II Park, please take extra care when using the northbound Mackays Crossing offramp and passing through worksites.
  • Paekākāriki residents are encouraged to use SH59 for travel to and from Wellington.
  • All drivers must follow temporary speed limits and directions from roadworkers.
