A signposted detour will be in place during two nights of upcoming closures on State Highway 51.
A stretch of the southbound lane of the state highway between Awatoto Road and Farndon Road just north of Clive will be closed between 7pm and 5am next Friday (15 December) and Sunday (17 December). The road will be open on Saturday night.
The northbound lane, from Hastings to Napier, will remain open.
Crews will be sealing a section of the road between Waitangi Road and Waitangi Bridge, and then line marking it.
This is the final part of stage one of the safety improvements project which has seen the installation of flexible median barrier on that stretch of road and a reconfigured entrance to Waitangi Road, ensuring safer access from SH51.
Access will remain for emergency services and for people who live or work on that section of road.
The detour for southbound cars and other light vehicles is via Awatoto Road, Meeanee Road, SH2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway, Pakōwhai Road and Farndon Road.
The detour for heavy vehicles (such as trucks) is via Awatoto Road, Meeanee Road, SH2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway, Pakōwhai Road and Te Ara Kahikatea.
The work is expected to take 2 nights to complete, depending on the weather conditions. If the weather is bad, we will need to postpone these works until the new year.
Meanwhile, construction has now begun on the roundabout at the intersection of SH51(external link) and Awatoto Road.
Construction has begun with the start of earthworks yesterday, a full 12 months ahead of schedule.
