The NZ Transport Agency advises that State highway 1 through the Brynderwyns Hills will remain closed for most of the day. There are detours in place.

A fully laden fuel tanker and a car have crashed on the south side, blocking the road in both directions.

The fuel has to be removed from the tanker before it can be shifted off the road. This is expected to take until about 5pm this afternoon.

The detour for northbound traffic is to turn left off SH1 on to SH12, right on to Paparoa Oakleigh Road, on to Paparoa Road, right on to Mangapai Road and back onto SH1.

The detour will take about 55 minutes.

For south-bound traffic the detour is to turn left at Waipu on to The Braigh, on to The Centre, on to Cove Road, Left on to Mangawhai Heads Road, on to Molesworth Drive, Right on to Moir Street, on to Kaiwaka Mangawhai Road and back onto SH1.

The detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles and will take about 40 minutes.
