SH2 at Nuhaka, north of Wairoa currently closed

A slip overnight following heavy rain has closed a stretch of State Highway 2 between Nuhaka and Mōrere, north of Wairoa, in the early hours of this morning.

A power pole has also fallen onto the road.

Contractors will be working to clear the slip this morning and will be working with other crews to remove the power pole from the road.

Waka Kotahi Central North Island Regional Manager of Maintenance and Operations Jaclyn Hankin is asking road users to delay their travel through the area.

“We know a lot of people rely on this important connection and we want to thank those road users for their understanding and support while we work to restore the connection.

“Clearing this slip and getting this section of road open safely is the priority this morning and contractors will be working as quickly as possible to make this happen.”

As at 6.30am:

State Highway 2 Nuhaka to Mōrere CLOSED

State Highway 2 Matawai to Ormond CLOSED

State Highway 50 Tikokino to Ongaonga CLOSED

State Highway 35 Gisborne to Ruatoria CLOSED. Scheduled to OPEN at 0730

State Highway 5 Napier – Taupō Road OPEN

State Highway 2 Wairoa to Napier OPEN

“Crews will be out this morning at other sites around Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay assessing the state highway network and other current closures following further heavy rain overnight.

“People should continue to keep an eye on the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website for the latest information on road conditions, as short-notice closures are a possibility while the rain continues,” says Ms Hankin.
