SH25 to reopen for two hours this afternoon

|

Update 7.30am 28 June 2023: SH25 will not reopen. Due to further rockfall overnight, contractors cannot pilot vehicles through between 7.30am – 8.30am as planned this morning.

This updates the information below.

State Highway 25 will re-open from 3.30pm this afternoon to allow road users to travel past the Ruamahunga slip site, however the road will close again from 5.30pm.

The conditions are not safe enough to allow traffic past the slip overnight.

Contractors are continuing to progress slip clearance and specialist abseilers are helping to remove unstable material on the cliff face today.

Providing it’s safe enough to do so, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors will re-open the highway to allow traffic through from 7.30am until 8.30am tomorrow morning – before closing again to resume work.

SH25 is likely to remain closed until 3.30pm again tomorrow before giving road users another window of time to travel through between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency appreciates the detour is significant, with road users needing to travel via Whangamata and Whitianga to the northern end of the Peninsula, and thanks everyone for their patience.
