SH51 safety improvements project entering final phase

A stretch of State Highway 51 will be closing for six days later this month for road widening and sealing, as the safety improvements project enters its final phase.

SH51, between Awatoto Road and Ellison Street, will close between Monday 15 April and Saturday 20 April (inclusive) while that stretch of road is widened.

The daily closure will start at 8am and finish at 4.30pm.

A signposted detour will be in place via Te Awa Avenue during this work.

This work is being carried out during the first week of school holidays to minimise disruption as the holiday traditionally means fewer vehicles on the road.

At the same time, motorists will see some additional sealing work taking place on the realigned road just south of the new roundabout. A close inspection of the surface by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and contractor Fulton Hogan revealed some imperfection in the surface of the northbound lane.

“We want to ensure this project is handed back, as per the design specifications, says Regan Mador-Leahy from Fulton Hogan.

“Resealing this surface now will minimise the chance of any winter damage being caused to the surface.”

SH51 Awatoto Road to Farndon Road southbound night closure in May

Next month we will be completing resurfacing work at the intersection of SH51 and Waitangi Road as part of our scheduled maintenance programme.

While this is not part of the safety improvements, completing it at the same time minimises the potential for delays at a later date.

During this maintenance period, the southbound lane of SH51 between Awatoto Road and Farndon Road will be closed nightly between 8pm and 5am, starting on Monday 6 May and ending at 5am on Saturday 11 May.

Please allow for up to 20 minutes to be added to your journey or avoid this area during this time.

During this closure, detours will be in place and these will be advertised on our social media and Journey Planner closer to the time.

These dates are subject to variables such as weather and may change at short notice.
