State Highway 1, Paekākāriki, closed following major crash

Drivers heading in and out of Wellington this morning can expect detours and delays while emergency services and contractors attend a major crash on State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.

Final update 4.45 pm:

The northbound lanes of State Highway, Transmission Gully, have been reopened to all traffic. The highway is now fully open.

The lanes, between Pāuatahanui and Paekākāriki, were restored around 4.45 pm

Waka Kotahi appreciates today’s incident has caused delays on the state highway network for people travelling between Wellington and the Kāpiti Coast.

We want to thank drivers for their patience and understanding while emergency services and contractors have worked hard to reopen the highway.

Travel delays are expected given the reopening of the northbound lanes has coincided with the afternoon commute and peak traffic times. Drivers are asked to take care when using the highway.


Update 3.20 pm:

The reopening of State Highway, Transmission Gully, is underway following a fuel truck crash early this morning.

The highway’s southbound lanes between Pāuatahanui and Paekākāriki reopened around 3.10 pm.

Work is underway to open the northbound lanes as soon as possible.

The next update will be when the highway is fully open.


Update 1.25 pm:

State Highway 1, Transmission Gully, is expected to remain closed for some time yet following a fuel tanker crash earlier today.

The highway has been closed between Pāuatahanui and Paekākāriki since approximately 6 am, following the crash south of the Paekākāriki offramp.

While every effort is being made to clear the crash scene and reopen the highway, it is unlikely to be open to traffic for peak commuting times this afternoon.

Traffic delays in and out of Wellington are expected at peak travel times. Drivers should factor this into their plans and check road conditions before travelling.

State Highway 1, Transmission Gully, remains closed between Pāutahanui and Paekākāriki following a crash earlier this morning.

Work to clear the crash scene is continuing, and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours and not reopen until later this afternoon

Traffic congestion on detour routes have eased. But drivers should continue to expect delays.

Update 7.35 am:

Drivers heading in and out of Wellington can expect lengthy delays this morning as emergency services and contractors work to clear a crash that has closed part of State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.

The crash, which was reported just after 6 am, occurred approximately three kilometres south of the Paekākāriki offramp.

A fuel tanker was involved and there has been a fuel spill. Emergency services and contractors are at the scene.

Motorists are warned State Highway 1, between Pāutahanui and Paekākāriki, is likely to remain closed for some time.

With detours in place, traffic flows on State Highway 59 are heavy with congestion and delays already occurring.

Drivers heading in and out of Wellington can expect significant delays while the highway remains closed, and the crash scene is cleared.


6.54 am:

Drivers heading in and out of Wellington this morning can expect detours and delays while emergency services and contractors attend a major crash on State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.

The crash, which has also seen a fuel spill, was reported just after 6 am this morning.

As a result, State Highway 1 is closed between Pāutahanui and Paekākāriki

Drivers should avoid the area and use other routes until the road is reopened.

Northbound travellers please use SH58, SH59 then back on to SH1. Southbound road users should detour via SH59.
