State Highway 2 traffic under new bridge for the first time

|

Southbound traffic will begin running under a span of the new MacKenzie Avenue bridge tomorrow for the first time.

Southbound traffic will begin running under a span of the new MacKenzie Avenue bridge tomorrow for the first time.

Also known as the Petone Park and Ride road bridge, because it gives vehicle access to Petone station’s Park and Ride facility, the MacKenzie Avenue bridge has steadily been taking shape during the past few months.

NZ Transport Agency Regional Manager Graham Taylor says this shift in traffic will allow for the demolition of the external walls and roof of the building locally known as ‘J-Block’.

“Workers have been carefully removing the walls and beams from the inside of the building and have also constructed a new external wall for the adjacent Indoor Sports Centre,” he says.

The shift also allows for the installation of underground services and the construction of the new permanent southbound SH2 lanes.

There will be a further change for SH2 southbound motorists later this month when SH2 southbound lanes move next to the current northbound lanes on the temporary alignment at the Korokoro intersection.  Further details will be sent out prior to the shift.

As with any change, we ask that road users take care as they adjust to the new layout.

Should the southbound shift not occur tomorrow it will happen on the next suitable day.
