Weekend care needed at busy Whangarei crossing

|

Drivers are reminded of changes this weekend at the intersection of State Highway 14 / State Highway 1/Maunu Road in Whangarei for necessary work linked to the NZ Transport Agency’s upgrade of the busy crossing.

A number of lanes will be closed from mid-morning Saturday (22 February) until mid-afternoon Sunday (23 February) so that the last of three large and heavy manhole covers can be replaced.

  • Two through lanes on SH14 for vehicles heading to Maunu Road and the CBD will be reduced to one lane through the intersection.
  • Two through lanes on SH1 Northbound will also be reduced to one lane through the intersection.

"Everything will be done to minimise disruption to drivers, but people should allow more time for their journeys because of possible congestion and delays," says the Transport Agency's Highway Manager, Tommy Parker. "The community has already shown tremendous support for the project and our team onsite, and we're asking for people to continue to show patience and care when they travel through the intersection while we complete this next important stage of work."

The upgrade is one of five projects along Whangarei's SH1 corridor to improve traffic flows and safety for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whangarei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
