We want to make State Highway 1 between L Phillips Road (near SheepWorld) and Pūhoi safer for everyone who uses this road. One of the best things we can do to prevent people from dying or being seriously injured on this road is reduce speed limits to make them safe and right for the road.
In October last year we talked with the local community, the council, the local police, road user groups and local businesses about how they feel about the current speed limits on SH1 between L Phillips Road (near SheepWorld) and Pūhoi, as well as asking for feedback on our proposed speed limit changes on this road.
The main themes that were raised by the community were about high speeds on this road, poor driver behaviour, possible effects on travel times, and ideas about other safety improvements to this road.

We’ve read all the feedback and used these insights along with our technical analysis to come back and formally consult on proposed speed limit changes. You can see the proposed speed limit changes, their locations and a map under the ‘What we’re proposing’ section below. We plan to implement any speed limit changes in two phases as explained in the table below.
