When you use a customer number as identification all vehicles will be linked under the one identity. If you have several branches operating from several different addresses and want vehicles separated under each branch, you'll need to apply for a customer number for each branch.

Not eligible

These customer types aren't eligible for customer numbers:

  • Family trusts.
  • Partnerships which aren't incorporated.
  • Friendly societies.
  • Sole traders (who aren't registered motor vehicle traders)
  • Trusts which aren't incorporated.

Letter of request required

If your organisation is one of these types, you must upload a letter of request on letterhead:

  • Statutory board.
  • Government body
  • State-owned enterprise (SOE)
  • School.
  • Church or Religious organisation.

Company details

If your organisation is one of these entities, it must be incorporated on the Companies Register, and you must provide your NZBN or Certificate of incorporation.

Motor vehicle trader numbers are issued by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Collection and dissemination of this information is authorised by Part 17 of the Land Transport Act 1998. Corresponding information held on other parts of the Land Transport Register may be amended.
