Important information for drivers

The school holidays are here, and with more traffic on the highways, it is crucial motorists drive responsibly so they keep themselves and others safe.

Be aware of risks like driver fatigue. Particularly if you are travelling long distance. Fatigue makes you less alert, it slows your reaction times, impairs your decision-making and driving ability, and can even make you more intolerant towards other drivers.

More information about driver fatigue, how it affects drivers, signs to watch for, and how to counter it can be found on our website.

Remember, if you feel tired – stop driving and take a break. It really can be a matter of life or death.

North Island

South Island

  • Maintenance and upgrade works continue until July on State Highway 6, Hira – Rai Saddle.
  • Weekday (Mon-Fri) stop/go traffic controls are in place between 7 am and 5.30 pm on State Highway 1, Weld Pass, from 3 July to 11 July. This is for channel and drainage works. It requires the road to be restricted to one lane under a 30 km/h speed limit to allow contractors to carry out the work safely. Drivers can expect five-to-ten-minute delays while this work is underway and should factor it into their travel plans.

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week. Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:

NOTE: Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. Bad weather can see work postponed to the next suitable night in the works programme.
