May 2020

Following the recommencement of works post COVID-19 lockdown, the CSM2 project team have made the most of the dry weather to progress many areas of the project, in particular the Main South Road Y-Junction, the Robinsons Road Overpass, local road connections and the main alignment between the Springs Road and Halswell Junction Road interchange.

February 2020

Two lanes of traffic are now traveling on both the Halswell Junction Road and Springs Road bridges. Traffic continues to switch between the new lanes on Main South Road (SH1) to accommodate construction work and work on the road underneath the Robinsons Road Overpass is about to start.

January 2020

Northbound traffic has been shifted onto the Springs Road bridge as well as eastbound traffic onto the new Halswell Junction Road bridge. The Weedons Interchange is fully operational, – providing access to and from Weedons Ross Road and Weedons Road, while allowing Main South Road to remain free flowing. Since filming this flyover, Main South Road (SH1) traffic has switched onto the new southbound lanes and access to Berketts Road from Main South Road has opened.

November 2019

The last drone flyover for 2019 from the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows the construction and sealing of the new southbound lanes, ahead of a traffic switch in the new year and the opening of the new left in/left out at Berketts Road. The off-ramp at the Weedons Interchange will also open early 2020.

Sealing work on top of Springs Road has also progressed with one lane of traffic scheduled to be transferred onto the bridge in the next month.

October 2019

The latest footage from the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows all beams now in place at the Robinsons Road overpass and the construction of the new road underway. Large amounts of the main alignment have now been sealed.

Construction of the new southbound lanes on (SH1) Main South Road, the new left in/left out at Berketts Road and the Weedons Interchange off-ramp continue to progress well and are scheduled to open this year.

September 2019

The latest footage from the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows both lanes of traffic now travelling on the new Shands Road bridge. Work will continue under the bridge and the temporary road will be removed.

All beams are now in place at the Robinsons Road Overpass and construction continues to progress well. Construction of the new southbound lanes on (SH1) Main South continues.

August 2019

Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows traffic using the new Weedons Road bridge and southbound traffic now travelling across the Shands Road bridge. Two great milestones achieved for the project during July 2019.

The Robinsons Road Overpass continues to progress well and vast amounts of landscaping is currently being undertaken along the alignment. Construction of the new southbound lanes on (SH1) Main South continues.

June 2019

The latest drone footage from the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows progress with the two interchanges at Weedons Road and Shands Road gearing up to take traffic over both bridges.

The excavation in the middle of the old Main South Road for the Robinsons Road Overpass is progressing well along with construction of the new southbound SH1 lanes. The temporary road at Waterholes Road has been removed. Blakes Road has now become two formed cul-de-sacs as the alignment cuts through to continue heading east towards Shands Road. At the Halswell Junction Road end of the project, the bridge looks in solid form with embankments beginning to be landscaped and kerbing occupying majority of the south approach.

April 2019

Progress in the latest drone footage from the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project shows the new Waterholes Road and Main South Road bridges taking traffic.

This footage shows how the CSM2 project team have recently moved SH1 traffic onto another temporary road, which allowed for a large size excavation in the middle of the old Main South Road to take place and make way for construction of the Robinsons Road Overpass. At the Halswell Junction Road end of the project, the Owaka subway extension has been completed and opened in March. The latest bridge on the project at Springs Road now has all beams in place.

February 2019

There has been some good progress made on the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project. The video shows excellent footage of the various new bridges, including Waterholes Road Bridge, Trents Road Bridge and the Weedons Road Bridge.

Please note that in order for the project team to continue the construction of the Weedons Interchange, Weedons Road will be closed at the SHI (Main South Road) intersection for approximately six weeks from 19 February 2019. Once this work is complete, the new south bound on-ramp will open to provide access from Weedons Road to SH1.

December 2018

The Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project is in its third year of construction. The remaining 58-tonne bridge beams at the Weedons Interchange have been installed.  A temporary road at Springs Road was opened making way for the pass construction to commence. Traffic management around the Shands/Marshs interchange will continue to change as phases of the interchange construction are completed. Please adhere to the signage, speed limits and keep yourself and the workers safe.

October 2018

The Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 (CSM2) project is gearing up for the most important construction season yet. A welcoming sight early November was the switch of traffic on Main South Road (SH1) onto the new northbound lanes, between Hoskyns Road and Robinsons Road. This switch allows construction of the southbound lanes to commence. The remaining beams at the Weedons Interchange can now be installed and the southbound roundabout and off-ramp constructed. A new temporary road has also opened on Springs Road.

Extensive earthworks, utility relocations and drainage across the entire 14.5km CSM2 alignment have made way for all aspects of the project to take form.

August 2018

Throughout the project we are installing pavement and street lighting. Work at Shands Road interchange has also progressed well over winter. There has been considerable work at the Halswell Junction Road end of the project with traffic now travelling on the temporary diversion road, embankments formed, and 16 piers installed for the interchange.

April 2018

All major components of the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 2 are currently under construction.

Half of the beams for the bridge at the Weedons Interchange are in place. Structures at Trents Road and Waterholes are nearing completion and await sealing. Utility works at the Springs Road end of the project are underway to allow the earth moving crews to come in and start constructing embankments.

Main South Road is a hive of activity. Construction of the southbound lanes will commence in June 2018 and traffic will be diverted onto a temporary diversion road during the construction of the Robinsons Road underpass.
