Speed limit change in Rodney, Auckland
Between 2020 and March 2023, Auckland Transport have implemented safe speeds across 2,830km of roads across the network. Following the speed changes, 39% of Auckland’s roads are now at safe and appropriate speeds.
Tranche 1 of the programme from 2020-2021 saw 830km of roads speed limits changed, resulting in a 22% reduction in crashes where someone was killed or seriously injured.
Rural roads have seen the most significant reduction in road trauma, with a reduction in rural road DSIs crashes of 26.9%, compared to a reduction of 18% on urban roads.
In 2022-2023 AT’s focus was changing a further 2000km of the network on rural roads and around schools.
The combined investment of $33 million since 2020 is expected to prevent a total of 29 death and serious injury crashes each year. That’s a significant 25% reduction achieved by reducing speed limits, so that when crashes do happen, they are more likely to be at survivable speeds
