New Zealand’s first raised safety platforms

Traffic on Gordonton Road in Hamilton has increased with population growth in the city and Waikato district.

Intersection improvements including the installation of traffic lights and a speed reduction were installed by the Hamilton City Council (HCC) to improve safety for the increased number of road users at the Thomas and Gordonton Road intersection.

In partnership with Waka Kotahi, HCC also installed the first approach raised safety platform in New Zealand.

Raised safety platforms encourage safer speeds by making it physically uncomfortable for motorists to drive over the platform faster than the suggested speed.

Raised safety platforms are designed that if something happens vehicles speeds are slow enough that there is enough time for people to react to either avoid a crash or by but reducing potential injuries when they happen. They can reduce deaths and serious injuries by up to 40%.
