Introduction

This work category provides for the construction/implementation of new or improved cycle facilities, and shared pedestrian and cycle paths.

The construction of on road interventions required to improve the safety and amenity value of cycling, for example a wider carriageway, vehicle parking configurations, pinch points or kerb structure is eligible for funding assistance.

Examples of qualifying activities

Examples of qualifying activities include, but may not be limited to:

  • shared pedestrian and cycle paths;
  • bicycle parking/racks;
  • kerb crossings;
  • signage;
  • new or improved cycle lanes, including on existing bridges ;
  • separate cycle paths;
  • widening the existing carriageway to provide cycle lanes, and;
  • project costs may include costs associated with attracting users to the facility, this may include:
    • all signage, markings, traffic signals, lighting etc.
    • targeted education promotion and/or advertising activities directly linked to the new facility.
  • property purchases. Note that, depending on the scale of purchase, this cost may be included in the Implementation phase cost, or shown as a separate phase in TIO . See WC 333: Advance property purchase for details of the principles and conditions of purchasing property for non-roading activities.

Applying for funding approval

Applications for funding approval of proposed projects should be made through the 'Improvement activity' module in Transport Investment Online (TIO). To be eligible for NLTF funding, any new activity must be added to the relevant Regional Land Transport Plan and to the NLTP.
