Safety improvements on existing roads and roadsides are part of our work to make travel in the Ōtaki to north of Levin corridor safer and resilient.
We’re making improvements to the safety of State Highway 1 from Ōtaki to Foxton and State Highway 57 to Shannon while we work to deliver the new highway.
Safety improvements including the installation of median or side barriers, painted wide centrelines or roundabouts are planned in these projects.
These short- and medium-term safety improvements were announced in 2018 when the Ōtaki to north of Levin project was re-evaluated to ensure alignment with Government priorities.

After public engagement in 2020, the State Highway 57 safety improvements project has now moved to construction.
Part 1 of construction started in May 2021 with the new roundabout at the SH57/Queen St intersection. Part 2 consists of road widening, painted wide centrelines and installations of stretches of side barrier. Construction is due to be complete in 2023.
Safety improvements on SH1 from Ōtaki to south of Levin is moving to construction in late 2022.
A draft design of safety improvements on SH1 from Levin to Foxton will be shared for feedback in public engagement in June 2022.
